Praise for the Voices of Book Series

O
“Pure inspiration.”

Shape Magazine

“…provides answers to practically anyone wondering ‘What now?’
…this worthy collection succeeds very well.”

Publishers Weekly

“Hearing others’ stories is the most substantial aspect of any sup-
port group… It’s the universality of the emotions that links these
essays and puts the human face on what can be a very scary disease.
For all patient health collections.”

in a dangerous city? I’m crazy! The figure falls; I hear a faint
moan. It’s him. I run as fast as I can in flip flops, the long weeds
scratch my legs. My heart pounds wildly. I reach him. I cry even
more. He’s covered with mud. His eyes are bloodshot and wet, he
looks puffy and broken. I love him. I love him so much. Why?
Why? Why?

Stumbling uncontrollably, he has no idea what’s going on.
“Where’s your car?” I ask. He doesn’t know. He cries and I hold
him up. Like always. He feels safe; I feel stupid and drained. The
police come cruising by. I pray and hold my breath. I got to him
before the cops did, thank God. This is the worst I’ve ever seen
him. I feel so bad, ashamed, even embarrassed. What was I doing?
How can I help him? I just keep picking up the pieces.

After a while of driving around aimlessly I finally find his car. A
tire is flat; the door is wide open; the keys are in the ignition. But
it’s still there. Incredible! He passes out.

It was a close call. They all are, but this was the worst. How many
more of these uncertain nights am I going to have to share with
him? I want to run away, forget his problems. Forget him. But I
can’t. I don’t. I want to help. I can help. Can’t I? It would be easy
to walk away. But I stay.

Jessica Saldivar is a 24-year-old law student and madly in love with
Roman, who is struggling to put his life back together. Through patience,
love, determination and perseverance, they beat the disease together.
