MATTERS ARISING from the November 4, 2014 Minutes: none

Living Waters Presbytery Nominations Committee: Terry Davies noted that no one has
yet agreed to represent Vision and Church Development on the Living Waters Presbytery
Nominations Committee. Lois Marshall briefly explained what would be involved.

Vision Keeper: It was agreed that a vision keeper would not be appointed for this
meeting.

Vision and Church Development Secretary: It was noted that as of February 3, 2015
Lois Marshall will no longer be a presbytery representative thus someone from the
commission will need to take over this responsibility. Lois will provide a summary of the
responsibilities involved in a separate attachment to commission members.

4. Standard Process Requirements

Closings:
Headford – Jane Sullivan reported that Headford is still in the process of closing and may
need some assistance from EDGE.
Victoria Square – Terry Davies attended a congregational meeting on the 23rd of November
where the congregation voted strongly in favour of continuing. Nancy Wilson from EDGE
will be working with them as they consider a new future.
Muskoka Falls – Jane Sullivan reported that Muskoka Falls is still discussing closure.

Request for Change of Pastoral Relationship: none submitted

Declaration of Vacancy: none submitted

5. Minister for Congregational Support Update:

Jane Sullivan reported that one of the main focuses of the work of congregational support
in these last couple of months has been conversations – conversations with congregations
discerning whether or not to close, conversations with groups of people seeking to develop
their congregational strategy for a healthy and hopeful future, conversations with leaders
sharing and cross-pollinating ideas. At nearly every turn, these conversations are
coalescing around a new common vision for the church in our geographical space: we are
together as churches and with other partners in our communities in order to serve God’s
mission in the world. We can’t be isolated and do it the way we’ve always done it,
because that isn’t working anymore. However, because change through networks of
conversations takes a lot of time, some congregations will not be able to hang on long
enough to be part of the new story. There is hope, but there is also sadness.
Jane reported that the Barrie Church Group had met but all churches had not been in
attendance. Central United in Barrie had a Visioning Day with EDGE on November 16th
and are now waiting for an update from EDGE.

6. Strategy Planning for 2014-15:

Terry Davies reported that the strategy group had met on November 25th and that
summary sheets had been sent out to commission members by David Leyton-Brown,
Karen Hilfman Millson, Ted Reeve and Jane Sullivan. Each of these summary sheets
was reviewed and highlights pointed out. The need to let go of doing things the old way
and buying into the ‘New Story’ was highlighted in all the summaries. Leadership will
be very important for this process, thus a cohort of leaders will be needed for a new way
of going forward.
Terry shared that he had met with the co-chairs of Congregational Life and had given
them a copy of EDGE’s Loving God, Loving Neighbourhood. Jim Keenan and Deb Mc
Millan are in agreement in principle with proceeding with the new tools which are
initially in pilot.
Terry shared that pilot projects for three new EDGE tools were in the process of being set
up. These tools include: Ministry Viability Assessments; Congregational Scan Spread
Sheets; and Property Scans. Congregations from Mount Albert, Forest Home, St. Paul`s
Midland, Richmond Hill United, Parry Sound and Bracebridge are to be involved in these
pilot projects. Pilots for Bradford, and Unity, Vasey will also be included. It was noted
that a $10,000 progress draw will be needed for EDGE.

7. Toronto United Church Council (TUCC):

Terry Davies reported that the East Gwillimbury Report as prepared by Martindale
Planning Services for TUCC and outlining the plans for major growth underway along
the Leslie Street corridor is being shared with churches in the area. This includes Sharon-
Hope United Church, Queensville-Holland Landing United Church and Keswick United
Church. Laurie Cook reported that she had been involved in the presentation for Sharon-
Hope.

8. Other Business: none

9. Thanks to be expressed:

Terry Davies thanked the Strategic Planning Group for their work on Tuesday November
25th and noted that they would be meeting again on Tuesday December 9th.

10. Closing Prayer:

Evelyn McLachlan led in a closing prayer.

Next Meeting: January 6th, 2015 at Grace United Church from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
