Chandler Park Wetland

Community Consultation Report

Prepared by the Environment and Sustainable Living Department

April 2016

“As you can imagine I have seen a vast number of changes to the area
you are now considering for your wetlands. I was very happy to see your
plans for the wetland area, and anything that will help purify the water in
the Yarra should be greatly encouraged.

When I was young my family and friends used to regularly swim in the
river, but I would not encourage people to do so now. Also plans to
encourage birds to the area, and also a picnic area for young families to
sit and enjoy watching the wildlife rather than walking or riding straight
past it is marvellous.”

~ Leila, born in Princess Street Kew in 1936

3.3 Mailed submissions
One written submission was received from a local resident that included detailed suggestions on the wetland
design as well as the surrounding landscaping, as well as sketch showing their suggestions in plan form.

Feedback

Ken Resident Suggested addition of dense plantings of riparian scrub around the wetland.

Suggested thickening the tree planting, to create more of a River Red Gum
Woodland atmosphere, both around the wetland and along the Freeway.

Suggested existing plan shows excessive areas of gravel/granite path, and
that this could be washed away in floods.

Suggested the picnic shelter should be replaced with a planting area or a bird
hide.

Suggested floating “islands” that are permanent but low level floating
structures anchored in place.

Suggested dead trees could be provided within the wetland area for birds to
perch and roost on, also nesting boxes.

Requested additional seating along the Main Yarra Trail.

Suggested that the inlet and outlet pipes could be replaced with open
channels for a more natural look and additional habitat niches.

3.4 Onsite ‘have your say’ session
An onsite community consultation session was held over two hours on Saturday 19 March at the location of
the proposed wetland within Chandler Park. Michaela Skett and Adam Rasmussen from the Environment and
Sustainable Living team represented Council on the day. The following table summarises the key points
made by residents to Council on the day.

Feedback

- regular local
walker

Had a look at plans, no big comments but sounds good. Will be
interested to see how it goes.

Sam Local rider Supportive as area is underutilised. Interested in key benefits:

Diane Local rider Supportive

Rick Local rider Very supportive of project objectives. Member of Riverland Conservation
Society (Banyule)

- Local Will it bring more snakes? Will it affect off-lead area?

Elise resident (Kew
East)

Brilliant idea, great initiative to encourage birds

4 Feedback Summary

The following table summarises the issues/topics raised during consultation by two or more people and provides preliminary Council officer response.

Feedback Summary

Theme Issue CoB design response

Cycling
considerations

Paths to be bike friendly and wide enough to minimise interaction
between cyclists and pedestrians

Ensure that the wetland does not affect the existing Yarra
Main Trail that is already available to walkers and cyclists as
a shared trail. The gravel trail around the wetland is intended
primarily for walkers and recreational cyclists stopping to
enjoy the wetland and surrounds.

Requests not to disrupt the mountain bike single track running
along the top of the river bank (between Main Yarra Trail and
River)

The track in question is an informal narrow dirt trail primarily
used by mountain bikers as a short cut of the Yarra Main
Trail.

A gravel access path will be constructed on the northern side
of the wetland to allow people to walk around the wetland
and access the seating and picnic area. The informal dirt trail
adjacent to the Yarra River is outside of the project area and
will be retained.

Environmental
Considerations

Concern regarding dogs - suggests dogs should be on leash

Chandler Park is not a designated ‘off-leash’ reserve and the
wetland area and surrounds will not be an ‘off-leash’ area.

Inclusion of a gross pollutant trap upstream of the sedimentation
basin

The catchment is predominately residential and therefore the
gross pollutant load would be low. The wetland will be
designed to continue to operate if there are some gross
pollutants that may enter the system. If it is found that the
gross pollutant load is higher than anticipated there is scope
to install a GPT in the future.

Suggestion of extraction and reuse of treated stormwater The system has been designed to allow the possibility of
reusing the treated stormwater within the park (eg plant
irrigation during dry periods). Further analysis and modelling
