appointment in Confederate service and was made a brigadier general,
leading a brigade at Bull Run the following month. That October he
was promoted major general and given a division, which he led with
distinction in the opening phases of the Peninsular Campaign in early
1862. Longstreet performed poorly when given a higher command
shortly thereafter, but redeemed himself during the Seven Days
Battles and was ever after in Lee's confidence, commanding what
would become the I Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. He led
his corpsdesignated a "wing" until late in '62with considerable ability
during the Second Bull Run and Antietam Campaigns, and was
promoted lieutenant general in time for Fredericksburg. In the spring
of 1863 he briefly took the corps on a expedition along the Carolina
coasts, returning
