Title: These Broken Stars
Author: Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Series: Starbound #1
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Genre: Young Adult Fiction | Science Fiction | Romance
It’s a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.
Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.
Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?
Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.
A timeless love story, THESE BROKEN STARS sets into motion a sweeping science fiction series of companion novels. The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.
From the moment I picked up this book I was lost. Lost in this beautifully crafted world with strong determined characters. These Broken Stars is a story of survival and love, set in a sci-fi world, with intriguing mysteries to solve, that will have you turning the pages late into the night.
Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe and Tarver is a war hero who came from a poor world. They are complete opposites and under normal circumstances wouldn’t even cross paths. But when disaster strikes and the Icarus (the huge luxury space ship) crashes, Lilac and Tarver have to rely on each other in order to survive.
The world building is very impressive and breathtaking. We get to explore the world beyond Earth, travel in deep space, and crash land on an alien planet. This is the reason why I love science fiction so much, because it takes us out of our own world and into one that is truly unique, imaginative and futuristic.
Told in duel points of view, the characters are both well-developed. Each of their stories are rich in detail and emotion that allow the reader to relate. I loved reading how they started off as strangers, then start to form an unbreakable bond and then ultimately falling in love.
Much of the beginning of this book focuses on the relationship of these two characters and how it develops into something more. But eventually you do realize there are also some freaky and creepy things happening on the planet they crash landed on. There are twist and turns that I did not expect, mysteries that had me up all night guessing, and an explosive ending.
I loved this book so much! I’m a big fan of Beth Revis’ Across the Universe series, and ever since the last book came out last year I’ve been searching for a new series to take it’s place. I found that with the Starbound series!
While I’m sad that the next book won’t be about Lilac and Tarver, I’m excited to revisit this world that Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner created. I’m sure the next couple will have an epic story of their own to tell. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a cameo of Lilac and Tarver??
If you want a romance-y sci-fi book this is it! Go read it now, you won’t regret it!
